Caring for Your Flowers from Next Chapter Gardens

Your flowers were harvested fresh and kept in clean water with professional floral holding solutions before purchase. Some blooms may be sold with closed or partially closed buds so you can enjoy more of the vase life at home. A few simple steps will help your flowers continue opening beautifully and last as long as possible.

For best results, place your flowers in a clean vase or jar, keep leaves out of the water, and display them away from direct sun, heat, drafts, and ripening fruit. Fresh water and a clean vase are two of the most important things you can do to extend vase life.

Caring for Your Lilies

Next Chapter Gardens lilies are often sold with several closed buds so you can enjoy watching them open in your home. Lilies are long-lasting flowers when they are kept cool, clean, and well-hydrated. Some buds may open over several days after purchase.

To extend vase life:

  • Use a clean vase or jar filled with fresh, cool water.

  • Before placing stems in the vase, remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.

  • Re-cut the stems at an angle before placing them in water, especially if they were purchased wrapped in kraft paper.

  • Keep lilies in a cool room, away from direct sunlight, heat vents, fireplaces, and hot windows.

  • Change the water every 1–2 days, or sooner if it becomes cloudy.

  • Re-cut the stems every couple of days to help them continue drinking.

  • As each flower opens, you may gently remove the pollen-covered anthers to help prevent staining.

  • Remove spent blooms as they fade so the remaining buds can continue to open.

  • Keep lilies away from cats. Lilies are highly toxic to cats if eaten.

Extra tip: If your lilies were purchased with mostly closed buds, give them time. They may continue opening over several days with fresh water and a cool location.

Caring for Your Gladiolus

Gladiolus are tall, elegant flowers that bloom from the bottom of the stem upward. They are often sold with lower florets beginning to show color and upper buds still closed, allowing you to enjoy the bloom progression at home.

To extend vase life:

  • Place gladiolus in a tall, clean vase with fresh, cool water.

  • Re-cut the stems at an angle before placing them in water.

  • Remove any foliage that would sit below the water line.

  • Use enough water to support the stems, and check the water level daily because gladiolus can drink heavily.

  • Keep the vase in a cool location away from direct sun, heat, and drafts.

  • Change the water every 1–2 days to keep it fresh and clear.

  • Remove lower florets as they fade so the upper buds can continue opening.

  • If needed, use a vase that supports the tall stems and helps keep them upright.

  • Avoid placing gladiolus near ripening fruit, which can shorten vase life.

Extra tip: As the lower flowers fade and are removed, your gladiolus stems will naturally become shorter. At that point, you may enjoy them more in a shorter vase or tucked into a small bouquet with other flowers. Removing the faded lower blooms and transferring the shortened stems to a smaller vase can give the flowers a fresh new look and help you enjoy them longer. You may also trim or remove the very top tips of the gladiolus stems if you prefer a cleaner shape or if the upper buds do not continue opening.

Caring for Your Mixed Bouquet

Your mixed bouquet was designed with freshly harvested flowers and foliage selected for beauty, color, and vase life. Each bouquet includes a small packet of Chrysal Flower Boost Premium Flower Food to help nourish the flowers, support hydration, and keep the vase water cleaner.

To extend vase life:

  • Start with a clean vase or jar.

  • Fill the vase with fresh water and add the flower food packet according to the packet directions.

  • Stir or swirl gently so the flower food dissolves.

  • Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.

  • Re-cut stems at an angle before placing the bouquet in the vase.

  • Keep your bouquet in a cool room, away from direct sunlight, heat, drafts, and ripening fruit.

  • Check the water level daily and add fresh water as needed.

  • Change the water every 1–2 days, especially if it becomes cloudy.

  • Re-cut stems every couple of days to help the flowers continue drinking.

  • Remove faded blooms or leaves to keep the bouquet looking fresh.

  • If your bouquet includes lilies, gently remove pollen as blooms open to help avoid staining.

Extra tip: Some flowers in your bouquet may open faster than others. Removing faded blooms allows the remaining flowers to shine and helps the bouquet last longer.
